Today we went up to Steven's Pass for Luca's first day on the slopes. Steven's is about a 90 minute haul northeast from our house in Redmond. The weather was perfect bluebird with not a cloud in the sky. After checking out our gear we headed over to the bunny slope that has a conveyor belt on it for the kids. I tried to teach Luca how to snowplow to which he responded with a venomous growl. Go to hell snowplows... then for the rest of the afternoon he shot down the hill like a un-controlled cannonball. Next weekend we are putting him in to ski school...
Going skiing with Luca brought back so many awesome memories of my early days on the slopes. We used to race up to Lake Tahoe fueled on egg mcmuffins and donuts for a days skiing then drive back to Marin. A few times we stayed in some of the awesome rental cabins that surround Lake Tahoe. I remember my Dad's hand bleeding on the snow after buckling up all of our boots on one occasion. Whenever we had to put chains on our car it was always a funny production. My dad had this retired orange ski parka that would come out with the chains. Then my Mom would have to back the car on to the chains. At the time it seemed very complex; kind of like anchoring a boat. Like every other kid I dreamed of driving a ski patrol snow mobile or growing some awesome beard and operating a snow cat.
Skiing is awesome and I am so happy that our family has started our pool of memories. It is hard work and we definitely need more booze on the next trip :-)
