Android phones vs iPhone 4 (HTC EVO - Google Nexus One)

Bye Bye Android phones, welcome home iPhone 4.
I took back the HTC EVO and sold my Nexus one on craigslist in favor of the new iPhone 4. Why? For my daily use I ended up carrying around the iPhone 3gs and a android phone. I used the 3gs to take photos, listen to music and play games. The Android phones I used for browsing the web, email and twittering.
Reason #1 the keyboard.
The keyboard on the iphone is so much better. The android keyboards on both these devices are not that great. The touch on the nexus one is not that accurate and the HTC sense keyboard on the EVO is just clunky & ugly at that.
Reason #2 the camera.
The EVO and Nexus cameras are both pretty good aside from some sporadic color accuracy issues. The real downer on the Android platform is the image editing apps which are butt ugly on the UI side. Android also has no underlying image resizing feature if you want to quickly email off a photo. It will instead cram a 1 megabyte file through your 3g connection which fails. iPhone 4 has a nice little popup offering 3 choices of image size. To do this on Android it requires opening a image editing app then exporting back out to gmail or twitter. Not a huge inconvenience but 30 seconds and 5 clicks later while your toddler is running away kind of sucks.
Reason #3 Multimedia.
I dragged my running playlist over to all three phones and ran alternately with the same headphones on a few different days. The EVO and Nexus One's audio quality is kind of crappy. I then tested side by side with the same file & headphones. Sure enough the audio is flat and a little distorted on the Android player. Add in no iTunes playlist support and this is a deal breaker for anyone who listens to music & uses iTunes.
Reason # 4 Battery life.
The HTC EVO is a really cool phone with a ton of features. The problems is you will never use them all because your battery will be dead in a half day. I found myself constantly turning 4g on then GPS off killing apps etc. The Nexus one is about the same but will last most of a day with moderate use. Forget to charge either the night before and you will have a dead phone by noon. iPhone 4 leave everything on and it lasts 36 hours with regular use and longer with light use. No Hassles killing apps or shutting stuff down.
Reason #5 Web Browser.
When froyo (Android 2.2) came out on the Nexus one you really saw the improved speed in the web browser. Pages would load almost instantly and surfing the web happened at desktop speeds. My iPhone 3gs was a dog compared to the Nexus One. The EVO's speed was kind of in between the two but totally usable. The new iPhone 4 is about the same speed as the Nexus one with froyo so much improved over the 3gs. Overall the Android browser is pretty ugly when it comes to native elements like form fields, select boxes and buttons. The iPhone has always shined at taking standard browser UI elements and adding polish to them. Take the form select select, when you first see it you are amazed by how good it looks and more importantly how great it works. Android will probably finish these items off in a later build but still has a long way to go.
Reason #6 Games.
I downloaded a few paid games for Android like Asphalt HD, Raging thunder etc. iPhone just has way more titles with better performance and polish.
Reason #7 usability.
Overall usability on Android is just off. When Lara or Luca picked up the Android phone they just did not get the hang of it and would put it down after a minute or two. The iPhone is just a night and day comparison compared to this. At 2 years old Luca could change the background of my wallpaper to his favorite photo on the iPhone 3gs and open any of the games that were installed. I watched and watched the inferior touch screens on both the EVO and Nexus One fail to register his touch and gestures correctly. This was apparent all across the OS but would really fail in the photo gallery app. The Nexus One photo gallery would regularly force close as he flicked from photo to photo. Lara like any beginning Android user had a hard time with the back button concept app switching. Overall the whole UX is just a little to deep and complex for the average user.
HTC Sense is just ugly... Polished Dogshit! I just wanted to add that. The Nexus one's standard calendar and mail is pretty nice. HTC then over polished them in to cheezy plastic.
It has been a week or so and here are the things that I miss on Android:
- Google's listen app. This is a awesome podcast listing utility.
- Entering audio text with the microphone icon. This voice recognition service is amazing and great for little things like address search and sms.
- EVO's large screen.
- Phone call quality and lack of dropped calls.
